North Maluku – The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has identified Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) as a strategically important industrial zone for the sustainable development of the global nickel industry.
Speaking during a visit to IWIP in Central Halmahera, North Maluku, on Friday, Ciyong Zou, Managing Director of UNIDO’s Directorate of Technical Cooperation and Sustainable Industrial Development, emphasized the park’s growing significance in supporting responsible nickel industrialization.
“This industrial area holds genuine strategic importance for the sustainable development of the global nickel industry,” Zou stated.
According to UNIDO, industrial operators within IWIP have demonstrated strong and credible implementation of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards. Zou noted that IWIP’s management has shown a clear and firm commitment to embedding ESG principles into its operational framework.
UNIDO also expressed its appreciation for the ongoing collaboration with IWIP and other private-sector partners in Indonesia, particularly through successful technical cooperation programs related to the development of eco-industrial parks.
IWIP has been officially designated as a pilot project for sustainable nickel industrial park management, under a cooperation framework between Tsingshan Holding Group and UNIDO. This designation is based on the Joint Declaration on the Sustainable Development of the Nickel Industry Chain, signed on 24 November 2025 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on the sidelines of the 21st UNIDO General Conference and the Global Industry Summit.
Through this partnership, Tsingshan, UNIDO, and IWIP aim to elevate industrial park management standards while accelerating the integration of ESG principles across industrial operations, reinforcing sustainability as a core pillar of nickel downstream development.
President Director of PT Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park, Kevin He, said the pilot project designation represents a key milestone in strengthening sustainability practices across the industrial zone.
“IWIP is committed to supporting national priorities, including downstream industrialization, value-added development, and human resource capacity building, while ensuring that environmental, social, and governance aspects are fully integrated into operational practices,” Kevin He said.
He added that these efforts are part of a broader strategy to position Indonesia as a key player in a sustainable global nickel value chain, in line with international expectations and long-term economic transformation goals.
